So my first graders are once again, back to reviewing money in our math curriculum. I watched the way the teacher taught the lesson today because I was confused with the way they present counting coins. I actually do not like the system at all and the teacher was getting frustrated with the kids because they were giving her wrong answers. Well duh, they didn't get it either! haha I have a pic of an example for you. I taught everyday math during my student teaching and I like the way they present counting coins. How do you do it with your kids? What do you find helps? I really want to help my little guys out and not be so mean like the teacher I watched.
I've never seen it presented this way. The nickel looks like peas in a pod to me. We use Everyday Math, too, and my only problem with it is quarters are introduced and mixed in the same lesson. Touch Math has been successful with our strugglers, too.

Peace, Love, and First Grade
If it was the first lesson on counting coins I am not surprised the children had a hard time. Adding up different amounts of coins is very challenging for first graders. I usually teach it a variety of ways and have the children choose the one that works for them. I actually like the example you posted and might add it to my lessons.
ReplyDeleteThanks...I'll look into touch math. We sometimes do it with addition/subtraction
ReplyDeleteNo it wasn't the first...it was just the first on introducing larger amounts. They've been working with coins since about september. I'm glad you like it. It just seems to confuse me kids.
